I started my journey with Kim in 2008 when she was a consultant with MLC Advice Solutions. We were a business which had grown over 8 years without any planning or strategy and our only solution to addressing capacity constraints was to work harder and hire more staff.

I’ve been running a successful wealth management business for the last 7 years and deal with a variety of clients and employees with vastly different personalities, backgrounds and needs that all have their challenges.

In October 2012 three experienced and professional Life Advisers merged their businesses to form Think Insurance.
With over 100 years of experience, the personality mix and skill sets it soon became obvious that we had enormous potential to grasp opportunities and grow into a very successful insurance business.
By late 2014 the three business partners recognised that to maximise that potential we were restricting ourselves as we were operating as three individuals and not as a team and this was not healthy.
It was then we were fortunate to meet Kim Payne of 9Rok.
Kim facilitated a meeting before Xmas but more importantly prior to the meeting Kim met one on one with each partner and our staff member and those conversations to this day remain respectfully personal and private between both parties.
This was the catalyst for Kim to understand any grievances or issues and at the meeting Kim, whilst making it fun, was brilliant in guiding, challenging and probing to achieve honest answers and we had powerful and positive outcomes that we would never have achieved without Kim’s expertise.

We had started our advice business from scratch and were established as part of an existing accounting and taxation business to provide a comprehensive integrated range of services for our existing clients. We had had success and were getting good feedback from our clients that we doing a good job and our approach was sound but knew we had to do a lot better to make our offering sustainable in the long term and easy to replicate.
We were concerned by the many and varied service offerings around, which one was the right approach for us, changes taking place as a result of FOFA and also directly affecting accountants in APES230.
We wanted a way of doing business that would stand in good stead regardless of changes that were about to take place in legislation, by dealer groups or by professional bodies. We wanted an end to end process which included our strengths, filled in the gaps, that was profitable, sustainable and was understood and appreciated by our clients.
We not only received what we engaged Kim for, we also received a framework which has enabled us to adapt, be flexible and focus in on our strengths and move with the times. Kim provides coaching in the same way a good sporting coach manages to get the best out of a team to achieve success as a whole. Kim takes time in working out what your strengths are, what you are enthusiastic about, providing you with the confidence to play to your strengths and extend yourself into areas you would not normally venture. You receive a lot more than a “ Value Proposition” or a “silver bullet” approach to building a successful advice business. Kim’s approach is personal, engaging and enjoyable.
Whilst we have only just begun our journey, we now know which path to take and how to get there. We feel confident of our place in the financial planning industry, our ability to provide value to our clients and to build an advice business that provides a good return for shareholders but also a career path for our existing and potential employees.

The biggest benefit for us has been a truly engaged team.
We were doing well as a business but we knew we could be doing better. We knew that the thinking that got us to where we are today wouldn’t necessarily get us to where we wanted to be in the future. We couldn’t keep doing the same things and expect to get a different result.

After running my business for the better part of 9 years as self employed I reached a point in my career where I was contemplating what next for the business?
It was at that point where I thought I really need someone who’s current, who understands current market trends and the direction this industry is hitting, and that’s when I reached out to Kim. One of the questions Kim asks me in every meeting is, “Why should I (as a customer) use your services?”
Recently I attended a networking function where I was asked by someone why they would use my services, given he has access to a cheaper offering online.
I then had a discussion with this person about his needs, his goals and discussed some concepts and strategies which might benefit him. I was able to clearly demonstrate that whilst price is important, it’s often the strategic thinking and application that can make a massive difference to the eventual outcome.
At the end of the conversation this person told me that in five minutes I’d given him more useful information than every other competitor had ever given him combined. Even better, a competitor was also present and he was taking notes!
